Saturday 1st December 2001 - FA 'Umbro' Trophy 2nd Round GRANTHAM TOWN 5-1 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC Gary Marrow made one change to the starting line-up following Tuesday evening's league Cup defeat against Worksop Town as he brought back Graham Lewis down the left in place of Scott Collins who had to be content with a place on the bench. Frickley
started the brighter of the two sides with Andy Evans seeing his 20 yard volley
deflected just wide of the left hand post in the 4th minute whilst two minutes
later Rob Hanby found Pete Myers in space down the left. He started to cut into
the box but rather than shoot he opted to send a low ball across the six yard
box but there was no team mate up in support. Myers had a good opportunity on 15
minutes when Evans picked him out at the far post with a great cross from the
left but he couldn't divert his effort goalwards. A minute later Evans shot wide
of the left hand post from the edge of the box as the home side rarely
threatened. Graham Lewis shot straight at Ziccardi from 22 yards on 19 minutes
before Martin Kearney was called into action for the first time as he was forced
to tip away a high cross from the left. On 27 minutes the home side managed
their first shot on target and with it came the first goal as Kearney was beaten
by shot inside his left hand post. Gary Marrow was then sent off for arguing
with the referee as he tried to point out that the Assistant Referee in the
Grantham half had flagged for a free-kick in Frickley's favour during the
build-up to the goal which was not given. Five minutes later it was 2-0 as the
Blues failed to clear their lines in the box. A Grantham player took as wild
swing at the ball but miss-hit it, although it fell kindly in front of him to
allow th ball to be chipped to the near post where it was headed in. The Blues
almost pulled themselves back into the game on 36 minutes as Simon Collins
emerged from a crowded Grantham box to shoot low towards the bottom right hand
corner from 10 yards but Ziccardi pulled off a great save to deny him.
Grantham's Wilson then turned and shot just wide of the left hand post from 15
yards before Collins fed Oleksewycz who wriggled past several challenges on the
edge of the Grantham box before shooting into the side netting on the stroke of
half time.
Frickley forced several corners at the start of the second half as they looked to haul themselves back into the game, one of which saw Ziccardi palm the ball off the line but disaster struck on 39 minutes when the Blues failed to clear following a free-kick, allowing Wilson to dire in from 6 yards. The home side then hit the left hand post twice within minutes as they threatened to run riot but the Blues slowly brought themselves back into the game. Oleksewycz turned and shot straight at Ziccardi on 53 minutes before Rob Hanby needlessly conceded a penalty by handling a cross in the box when no-one was near enough to him to cause any danger. The penalty was duly converted by Bull. The Blues did manage to pull a goal back on 63 minutes when Evans played the ball inside the right full back into the bath of LEWIS who scored from a narrow angle. There was, however, to be no great fight-back and the home side added a fifth two minutes into injury time with the Blues' defence all at sea. Frickley Athletic : Kearney, Simon Collins, Gowan, Hanby, Wordsworth, Jones, Lewis, Price, Evans, Oleksewycz (Fothergill 58), Myers (Scott Collins 80). Unused subs Duffty, Ogley, Mark Wilkinson Attendance : 410 Referee : ?? - The programme didn't say!!
