Saturday 24th July - Goole AFC 2-2 Frickley Athletic

The Blues were held to a 2-2 draw at NCEL side Goole AFC in a game they really should have won, especially after taking a 2-0 lead after just 25 minutes. Antony Jackson started his first game for several months whilst triallist Graham Severn started at left full-back

The Blues took the lead with just 11 minutes on the clock. Severn won the ball well just inside his own half before releasing Stefan Zoll down the left who bore down on goal but saw his shot well blocked by the Goole 'keeper. The rebound fell to Troy Bennett but his shot came back off the bar only for SEVERN to follow up and fire in a low 18 yard shot which glided inside the right hand post. Shortly afterwards Marc Shackleton was called into action twice in quick succession. First he pushed a speculative 25 yard shot over the bar and then following the corner he had to react quickly to tip a curling 18 yard shot over the bar. Mark Vickerage had a good chance to increase the lead on 22 minutes when he pushed the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper to latch onto a long through ball but rolled the ball agonisingly wide of the right hand post. Three minutes later VICKERAGE made up for his miss by hooking the ball in at the far post following a deep cross from Lee Pugh. However, the home side were awarded a penalty on 36 minutes when Antony Jackson gave the ball away in his own box and Steve Robinson brought down the Goole forward as he shaped to shoot. The referee immediately awarded the penalty which was scored confidently. Four minutes later the scores were level when a quick free-kick down the Blues left found a Goole forward in space and he coolly turned and rolled the ball just inside Shackleton's right hand post.

The first chance of the second half fell to the Blues on 53 minutes, with Wayne Benn winning the ball on half way before riding three challenges as he broke into the Goole box but his 16 yard shot was blocked by the 'keeper with the follow-up being put just wide by Zoll. A minute later Zoll rattled the underside of the crossbar with an 18 yard shot as they started to force the home side backwards. Substitute James Walker saw his teasing cross from the right just evade everyone but on 77 minutes the home side came close to snatching a winner but their forward sliced wide of an open goal from 10 yards. Ten minutes from time the Blues went close themselves when Benn's quick free-kick released Pugh down the right but his ball across the face of goal was met by Vickerage who couldn't get enough power behind the shot to trouble the 'keeper.
