Saturday 28th September 2002 - FA Cup 2nd Qual Rnd.
Gainsborough Trinity 3-2 Frickley Athletic
Phil Sharpe surprised everyone by playing Jon Wordsworth at right full-back
with Antony Jackson and Craig Marsh in central defence. Remo Nesa came in to
replace Scott Kerr whilst Nigel Hemstock started up front alongside Andy Evans.
Frickley got off to the worst possible start when Marsh brought down
Ellington just inside the box, leaving Referee Ronnie McNaughton no alternative
but to award a penalty after just 51 seconds. Trinity player/manager Phil Stant
duly scored from the spot. However, within 60 seconds Frickley were level. From
Wordsworth's throw-in down the right, Jackson launched the ball into the box and
Evans challenged keeper Richardson who got nowhere near the ball, leaving Chris
Gowen to play it across the face of the goal into the path of HEMSTOCK who
slotted in from close range. The home side slowly started to force the pace with
Gowen being forced to clear off the line on 14 minutes. On 20 minutes they
retook the lead when Wordsworth got the wrong side of Stant as a deep cross came
over from the Gainsborough right. The tall Trinity forward headed back across
goal for Ellington to score easily. Samways was then forced to make some good
saves to keep Frickley in the game, most notably from an Ellington 18 yarder
after he had shrugged off Jackson. Wordsworth was having a particularly torrid
time in his unaccustomed position whilst Jackson and Marsh were struggling to
close down Trinity's forwards.
After the restart some good work by Nesa forced Eshelby to head narrowly over
his own bar but the resulting corner came to nothing. The good start made to the
second period was soon curtailed though as on 50 minutes Stant sent over a cross
from the right which was side-footed in by the unmarked Nicholson. At the other
end, Evans found himself in a good position to the right of the box. His mis-kicked
cross found Nesa who shot just wide of the right hand post. Surprisingly, Sharpe
then replaced Wordsworth with Morris when the better option might have been to
move Wordsworth to centre half in place of either Jackson or Marsh. As a result
Hancock moved to right full-back and Frickley then started to enjoy better
possession. Hancock and Hemstock combined down the right for Hemstock to break
from halfway into the box and forced a corner on 70 minutes before Evans had an
angled 18 yard shot deflected millimetres wide of the right hand post. As full
time nearer Jackson was pushed up front and his presence helped Frickley pull a
goal back as he unsettled the Trinity defence, allowing a tame ball forward from
Nesa to run past them. As Richardson started to come out out MORRIS got there
first to prod the ball past him and into the net but it was too little, too
late.
