Tuesday 23rd September - Frickley Athletic 0-0 Gainsborough Trinity

Phil Sharpe started with the same side as Saturday against a Gainsborough trinity side who have improved tremendously since their terrible start to the season. Trinity included former Frickley player Chris Hurst in their line-up.

The first attempt at goal came from the visitors on 12 minutes when Gareth Grant turned and shot straight at Mark Samways from 18 yards. The Blues responded a minute later with Dan Sheriffe running at the Trinity defence before letting fly from 20 yards but Jamie Holmshaw gathered the ball at the second attempt. Trinity were soon on the attack again as minutes later the impressive Grant beat Chris Kamara for pace before firing in an angled drive which Samways parried. On 27 minutes hesitancy in the Blues defence presented a chance to Lee Ellington but he fired over from 16 yards. Trinity were starting to look like opening the scoring and went close again two minutes later when Luke Stanton's free kick from half way found Chris Timons unmarked in the box but he missed the ball completely in front of goal. Shortly afterwards, another free kick from Stanton fell to Hurst who was unmarked at the far post but his header was well blocked. The resulting corner saw Timons' close range shot brilliantly blocked by Samways and the follow-up shot was also charged down. The Blues managed to stem the visitors attacks and came close to snatching a shock half time lead on 45 minutes when a good move saw Lee Pugh's pass flicked into the bath of the onrushing Kamara down the right by Gerard McCargo. Kamara's dangerous cross across the face of goal was just missed by Lee Morris but Sheriffe met it with his knee at the far post only for Holmshaw to react quickly to smother the ball on the line. The second half saw the Blues stem the Trinity attacks and enjoy much more possession, with clear-cut chances for both sides at much more of a premium, although Samways did well to saved a point blank header from Hurst on 58 minutes. The Blues best effort fell to Antony Jackson on 77 minutes when, following a freekick, Paul Marquis turned well on the edge of the box to tee up Jackson whose powerful first time shot from 25 yards only just cleared the bar with Holmshaw rooted to the spot.
