Tuesday 11th November - Gainsborough Trinity 3-0 Frickley Athletic

Phil Sharpe started with the side that played most of the second half against Marine on Saturday, with Nick Richardson starting in place of Dan Sheriffe who was relegated to the bench.

Frickley were up against it within the first 5 minutes when Referee Keith Lawson very harshly awarded a penalty against Gary Hatto for handling in the area but MarK Samways dived to his left to save Lee Ellington's spot-kick. However, on 14 minutes the home side took the lead when a corner from the left was flicked on by Stuart Reddington with the ball flying into the net past Samways. Six minute later the Blues found themselves 2 goals down as Antony Jackson twice failed to clear his lines inside his own box, allowing Luke Staton to take advantage and beat Samways at his near post. The impressive Gareth Grant then shot narrowly wide following a good run from half way whilst on 25 minutes Ellington took the ball around Samways but Jackson did well to clear off the line. Slowly Frickley started to enjoy some play in the game but they were unable to make much impression upon the Trinity goal. Just before half time Samways got down well to save a low shot from Ellington.

At half time Sharpe replaced Jackson with Sheriffe, with Lindley moving to centre half and Sheriffe playing in midfield and Frickley suddenly started to look like a team that had scored 18 goals in the previous 4 games. On 48 minutes Lee Pugh did well to win the ball off Grant on the edge of the Trinity box and he immediately spotted Paul Norton off his line and floated an angled shot over the former Frickley keeper but the ball drifted agonisingly over the bar. A minute later Sheriffe shot inches over the bar from 20 yards whilst on the hour Duncan Richards saw his low 18 yard shot parried by Norton before being cleared by a defender. Shortly afterwards Sheriffe went even closer when he pciked up a poor clearance to run at the defence and see his 18 yard shot clip the outside of the right hand post. Inevitably, Gainsborough broke away down the left where Grant picked up an unmarked Chris Hurst who had the simple task of heading into an empty net. Trinity the started to impose themselves on the game again and went close to scoring a fourth through Dene Cropper and Ellington whilst Frickley rarely looked like troubling Norton again.
