FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 2-2 GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY
The Blues once again had Gary Duffty missing through injury and Nicky Cranston started a suspension for his sending off at Worksop. Chris Hurst was also absent along with Lames Watson.
Frickley started strongly, forcing a couple of early corners as they passed the ball around better than they had done for quite a while. After 10 minutes Tommy Brooks blocked a clearance by a Gainsborough defender to break clear down the left but his ball into the box eluded everyone. Then Ian Edge collected a pass from Brooks on the edge of the box, truned and shot but Curry in the Trinity goal turned the low shot round the post. But it wasn't long before the early pressure brought some reward. After 15 minutes Frickley were awarded a free-kick for hand-ball some 20 yards from goal in a central position and CRAIG GOODYEAR stepped up to curl the kick in, with the ball coming back of the left hand post to finally cross the line in the opposite corner. Six minutes later the Blues found themselves two goals up for the first time this season when Duane Beckett broke clear, rounded Curry and squared into the path of BROOKS who tapped in from 4 yards. The Blues were starting to play some good football and began to dominate the game. Edge volleyed wide from around 12 yards following a cross from the left by the impressive Brooks before Trinity created their first effort of the half with Reed slicing wide from 12 yards when unmarked. On 36 minutes Trinity's Watts beat Mark Wilkinson to the ball on the edge of the area but clipped his shot wide as Trinity finally began to exert a bit of pressure but the Blues defence looked in control with Brendan West commanding operations at the back. Just before half time Chris Hilton was desperately unlucky not to score a third as he, Edge and Hanby combined down the right with some brilliant one-touch football for Hilton to burst into the box but, as Curry came out, he lifted the ball over both keeper and crossbar.
The second half saw Trinity come out much more determined then they were in the first and the Blues, who seemed content with their two goal lead, started to become complacent. Staright after the restart West's bad pass across the back was intercepted by Watts but Wilkinson was equal to his effort. The Blues struck back with a cross from the left being flicked on by Scott Collins for Beckett to head across goal with Edge unable to retrieve it in time. At the other end a 30 yard free kick was headed dangerously across goal but Edge cleared the danger before a great through ball by Goodyear which split the defence found Collins but his 18 yard drive was blocked by Curry with no-one on hand to put in the loose ball. Then, out of nowhere, Trinity pulled a goal back with Pickering scoring from close range on 67 minutes. Less than a minute later the referee, Mr Kellett, mysteriously pointed to the spot to award Gainsborough a penalty after Wilkinson collected a hopeful ball forward off the head of a Trinity forward but Wilkinson brilliantly dived to his left to push away Goodwin's spot kick. The visitors were now forcing the pace more and more with Frickley limited to just the occasional breakaway. They were also helped by some questionable decisions by Mr Kellett, none more so than when Richard Bashforth, on as sub to replace Martin Fox, played a good ball out of defence to release Brooks with Frickley on a 4 on 2 but Drayton went down holding his head, nowhere near play or another player, and Mr Kelllett immediately stopped play. Half chances went begging at both ends until in the 89th minute Lafferty got back with a brilliant last ditch tackle to deny Drayton but from the corner Allen bundled the ball in for the equaliser. A minute later Joe McAreavey almost snatched a dramatic winner for the Blues when he found himself unmarked near the penalty spot following a corner but he fired narrowly over the bar.
