Friday 21st December 2001 - UniBond Premier Division

GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY 2-2 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

Rob Hanby made a return to the side in place of Phil Brown whilst Carl Fothergill came in up front in place of loan player Steve Oleksewycz who has been the subject of a bid from Worksop Town. Matthew Wilkinson made a welcome return to the squad having returned to the area for his Xmas break from university.

After going close through a Fothergill cross-cum-shot which just eluded Rory Prendergast on 5 minutes Frickley, playing in their yellow change strip, took the lead on 13 minutes. STEVE PRICE stepped up to convert the spot-kick after Fothergill was pushed in the box trying to get on the end of a cross. The home side equalised eleven minutes later as Martin Kearney could only block a close range shot, leaving Ellington to knock the ball into an unguarded net. Trinity started to force the pace for the last fifteen minutes of the half, with Hanby coming to the rescue when he headed off the line from a near post header following a corner.

The second half was barely a minute old when Frickley were awarded a free-kick midway inside the Trinity half which Simon Collins took. The ball was half cleared as far as Prendergast on the edge of the box. His attempted shot was blocked and again half cleared but only as far as COLLINS who rifled in a low shot from 18 yards which beat Ingham in the home goal and went in off the left hand post. Two minutes later Pete Myers beat the last defender to a pass from Andy Evans but was brought down for his trouble with the guilty defender being lucky to escape with just a yellow card. Frickley enjoyed a spell of pressure but, unfortunately this didn't produce a third goal and the home side started to come back into the game. Although, on 65 minutes Prendergast shot narrowly wide of the right from the edge of the box when under pressure but on 79 minutes the home showed their intentions when Watts put a 25 yard free-kick over the bar. Two minutes later Ellington received the ball in space outside the right hand corner of the box before turning and firing an unstoppable shot past Kearney and just inside the left hand post for the equaliser. The final few minutes saw chances at both ends with both Evans and Fothergill being just millimetres away from connecting with a dangerous cross from Prendergast whilst at the other end an equally dangerous cross flew across the face of Kearney's goal but, thankfully, no-one was able to apply the finishing touch.

In the end, although it was disappointing not to hang on to a 2-1 win with just nine minutes to go a draw was probably a fair result on the balance of play.
