Monday 1st April - UniBond Premier Division FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 1-1 EMLEY The finals score of 1-1 was probably a fair result in a match which seemed to turn twice following substitutions by the Blues. First, following the introduction of Pete Myers for Matt Russell on 47 minutes, the Blues took the lead - through Myers - and secondly, following the replacement of Chris Gowen with Andy Evans with Rory Prendergast dropping back to left full-back, Emley came back into the game to snatch an equaliser. After missing Saturday's defeat at Droylsden Steve Price returned to the midfield whilst Jon Wordsworth was welcomed back after missing 12 matches through injury and took the place of the injured Dean Jones. Graham Lewis replaced Andy Evans up front who was rested after carrying an ankle injury for a while. Emley had former Blues' player Miles Thorpe in their midfield but there was no sign of Gary Hatto. Playing into the wind in the first half he visitors had a great chance to take the lead on 9 minutes when Darren Day blazed over from 16 yards after finding him in acres of space following a ball in from the left. Less than a minute later Leroy Chambers flicked on a long throw from near the corner flag into the path of Simon Collins but a defender managed to hack the ball clear off his foot. On 15 minutes a cross from the left by Prendergast was header clear only as far as Chambers on the edge of the box who volleyed wide of the right hand post. The Blues went close again on 29 minutes when a Prendergast corner from the right was met by Chambers but his header was deflected narrowly over the bar for another corner. Just after half time Russell was replaced by Myers and two minutes later he gave the Blues the lead when Prendergast beat two defenders down the left before cutting the ball across the box to the far post where MYERS stabbed in from close range. Three minutes later, and looking clearly offside, Day broke clear and lobbed Wilkinson but the ball landed on the roof of the net before, on 67 minutes, Paul David headed over from close range following an Emley corner on the right. Evans then replaced Gowen on 69 minutes and two minutes later the scores were level. A long ball out of defence found Simeon Bambrook who beat Wordsworth for pace down the left of the box before playing the ball inside to Day who fired into the roof of the net from close range. Bambrook then fired over from 20 yards after a corner was only partly cleared before he Blues had a good chance to retake the lead on 83 minutes. Emley's Ryan Crossley stumbled on the ball midway inside the Blues half and was robbed by Chambers and Myers with Myers playing it out to Lewis who ran at the Emley defence before playing it out wide to Prendergast. Unfortunately, Prendergast's cross was poor and was deflected for a corner whilst the Blues had Evans, Collins and Myers all unmarked at the far post. In the end, a draw was probably a fair result but, had the Blues not had their defensive injury problems they may well have been able to hold on to their lead.
