FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 1-3 EMLEY

With Nicky Cranston again suspended the only change to the side was Martin Fox being preferred to Brendan West as left full back. Emley had former Blues' player's Gary Hatto and Miles Thorpe in their line-up and it was the visitors who almost took the lead after just 6 minutes but Fox denied Nazha with a brilliant last ditch tackle. The Blues responded with Steve Price finding Graham Lewis on the edge of the box. He turned and shot immediately but Cuss did well turn to turn his effort away for a corner. From the corner the Blues took the lead. Ian Edge's kick eluded everyone in the box except GARY DUFFTY who headed in at the far post from close range after 10 minutes. Lewis went close again after 23 minutes when a long free-kick by Andy Carney was allowed to bounce on the edge of the Emley box leaving Lewis to turn and volley just wide of the left hand post from 20 yards. As the half went on Emley started to press more and more but Dean Jones and Matt Wilkinson were coping well with most things that came their way. However Bambrook was looking dangerous and on 27 minutes he beat both Fox and Edge down the Emley right and cut inside but ballooned his shot over from just inside the box. The Blues were dealt a blow on 29 minutes when Jones was forced to be replaced by West after suffering an injury and this seemed to unsettle the defence. On 32 minutes a free-kick from the Emley left wasn't cleared, leaving Day in space but he delayed his shot and was eventually crowded out. Emley drew level after 39 minutes when the impressive Bambrook was brought down inside the box by Wilkinson who dived in after he had beaten Fox. Bambrook promptly gave Carney no chance from the spot. The Blues responded with some neat football between Lewis and Edge on the left. Edge then fed Duffty inside the box who laid the ball back to Hanby who scuffed his shot from 18 yards.

Frickley started the second half well with Chris Hurst heading a good chance wide from 12 yards following a cross by Hilton on 47 minutes and then Hanby sent Duffty away down the right. He sent over a low cross to Lewis who turned and shot just wide. On 50 minutes Emley ought to have taken the lead when Hatto sent over a cross from the left which left Nicholson on his own just a few yards out at the far post but all he succeeded in doing was chesting the ball out for a goal kick. However, 2 minutes later they did take the lead. A low cross from the left saw Nicholson (I think!) score from close range after being left unmarked at the far post. On 63 minutes some good play between Price, Edge and Hurst finished with Hurst sending over a good cross to Lewis but he was crowded out before he could get a shot in and the Blues were made to pay shortly afterwards when Nazha sent over a cross from the left which was met at the far post by Bambrook who volleyed into the ground but the ball looped over Carney into the far corner. At the other end Price went close with a screamer from 25 yards which grazed the angle of the right hand post with Cuss rooted to the spot whilst Carney did well to block a piledriver from 18 yards by Nazha. Almost at the death Hurst went close again when Price shipped the ball through to Hurst whose header was expertly tipped around the post.
