Saturday 13th December - Frickley Athletic 0-3 Droylsden

With Karl Colley being involved at Halifax Town and Antony Jackson injured Phil Sharpe was forced to play Phil Lindley and Steve Robinson at the heart of the defence whilst the injured Lee Morris was replaced by Michael Blythen. Dale Rimmington came into the midfield.

The home side took the lead with their first attack of the game with only 2 minutes 30 seconds on the clock. A free-kick from 30 yards out was played into the path of Steve Brodie who broke down the left to send over a low cross which struck Robinson and shot into the roof of the net. The Blues responded with Scott Brough having a 15 yard shot well saved by Paul Phillips but Droylsden continued to look dangerous. Robinson was fortunate to escape without receiving a card from the Referee when he was adjudged to have brought down former Frickley forward Leroy Chambers as he threatened to break clear  on 22 minutes and thankfully the free-kick was blazed over the bar. Blythen then saw an angled drive saved at the second attempt by Phillips whilst some good build up play on 28 minutes saw Phillips do extremely well to collect the ball off the head of Rimmington from Gary Hatto's cross. Mark Samways then had to be alert to smother a close range effort from Chambers but on 37 minutes the visitors got the benefit of a handball appeal that wasn't given, allowing David Cameron to feed the overlapping Carl Furlong who beat Samways from 12 yards. On the stroke of half time Hatto's deep free-kick was flicked on by Rimmington to Blythen whose faint touch lifted the ball over Phillips who managed to retrieve the ball from behind him before it crossed the line.

Just 3 minutes after the break Blythen missed a good chance to pull a goal back when Nick Richardson sent him clear but his 18 yards shot went inches wide of the right hand post. Sharpe then replaced Blythen with Mark Vickerage. Samways then made two good saves in succession from Danny Warner and Chambers before Sheriffe had a run at the Droylsden defence but his shot was charged down and the follow-up by Rimmington struck a defender lying on the ground and was cleared. Lindley then got down the left to send over a cross which Sheriffe headed inches wide of the near post. On 74 minutes Sheriffe powered another header fractionally wide of the right hand post and, just to prove that it was one of those days, Droylsden broke away for Furlong to score Droylsden's third, benefitting from a lucky ricochet as the Blues defence failed to clear. On 82 minutes it looked as though the Blues would finally score their elusive goal but it again the ball went agonisingly wide of the right hand post from Brough's close range shot following Lee Pugh squaring the ball to him.
