Saturday 4th October - Droylsden 4-0 Frickley Athletic The Blues suffered a second successive heavy defeat as they were beaten by a quick scoring burst at the beginning and end of the match. Phil Sharpe left out Kieron O'Brien and dropped Gary Hatto back into the left back position. Phil Lindley was forced to play in central defence as Karl Colley was unable to make the trip at the last minute. Stuart Preston came in down the right with Lee Pugh returning to the midfield and Chris Kamara to the defence. The home side took the lead after just4 minutes when a free-kick from just over half way on the left was floated over to the far post to Ged Murphy who was left unmarked to pick his spot with and angled header from 8 yards. Five minutes later it was 2-0 as Danny Byrne got on the end of another cross from the left to flick the ball past Mark Samways from 15 yards. Former Frickley forward Leroy Chambers found himself clean through on goal after 27 minutes but Samways made a great block with his legs and Chambers then contrived to put the rebound over the bar with an open goal in front of him. Preston was then replaced by Sheriffe on 30 minutes. On 35 minutes Samways had to be alert to tip a header from Chambers over the bar whilst the Blues had their first sniff of goal just before half time when Sheriffe managed to beat Droylsden 'keeper Paul Phillips to a Hatto cross only for his header to clear the bar. Half time saw Paul Hurrell replace Gerard McCargo but the Blues till struggled to create much up front with constant long balls going astray. On 65 minutes the referee, Mr Turner, started to become the centre of attention when he sent off Droylsden's Byrne for a second bookable offence just minutes after cautioning him for not retreating at a free-kick. Two minutes later the hosts were down to 9 men when an innocent looking tackle by Ged Murphy on Lee Morris down the left saw Murphy receive a second yellow and subsequent red card from Mr Turner. Sharpe then pushed Jackson up front in a quest to make the extra numbers tell but the balance was soon redressed as on 73 minutes Kamara pulled back Steve Porter as he tried to break away down the Droylsden left with Mr Turner showing Kamara his second yellow car of the game and therefore a red. On 77 minutes Hatto's left wing cross was pulled back by Michael Blythen to Hurrell whose curled shot from 18 yards went just wide of the left hand post. Lee Pugh then joined the growing list of players to be sent off when he also received his second yellow card on 80 minutes following a miss-timed tackle. On 85 minutes the Blues should have pulled a goal back when Hurrell picked up a poor clearance some 30 yards out and threaded the ball through to Morris but he shot woefully wide from 15 yards. The miss proved costly as second later Porter notched Droylsden's third goal whilst right at the death Droylsden substitute Alex Kevan tapped into an empty net after Chris O'Brien had pushed the ball passed Samways. Frickley Athletic : Samways, Kamara, Hatto, Lindley, Jackson, Richards, Preston (Sheriffe 30), Pugh, Morris, Blythen, McCargo (Hurrell 45). Unused sub. Sharpe. Att: 216 Ref : Mr S. Turner (Runcorn)
