Tuesday 6th November 2001 - FA 'Umbro' Trophy 1st Round Replay FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 1-1 DROYLSDEN (aet) Frickley win 4-3 on penalties The Blues started with the same starting eleven with the only change being Craig Marsh replacing Rob Hanby on the bench. Hanby has a twisted ankle but is hoping to be fit for Saturday. The game started in much the same way as Saturday's first meeting between the two sides with the Blues creating numerous chances in the opening quarter of an hour but failing to take any of them. In the 4th minutes Graham Lewis sent over a dangerous looking cross which Hulley tipped away with the ball just evading Gary Duffty whilst minutes later Andy Evans fed Lewis down the left and he cut inside to shoot wide of the right hand post at the second attempt. Evans then headed on to Carl Fothergill but when the ball finally dropped for him he could only toe poke his effort straight at Hulley. Simon Collins went close with a dipping 25 yard free-kick which went fractionally over the bar whilst Droylsden's first attempt came on 25 minutes when Nigel Evans had a 20 yard shot well held by Martin Kearney. Andy Evans then had a half chance when a cross from the right fell to him in front of goal but he scuffed his snapshot wide from close range. On 37 minutes, the Bloods, who had rarely threatened the Blues' defence, took the lead. Kearney came out to meet a cross from the right but only succeeded in colliding with Jon Wordsworth and Dean Jones as he only got half a punch on the ball which fell kindly to Carl Holmes who fired into the empty net from 30 yards. The visitors forced the pace for the remainder of half as the Blues started to run out of ideas. The second half started off well for the Blues as they grabbed an equaliser on 52 minutes. Steve Price's cross from the right was headed down by Andy Evans to Phil Brown whose 18 yard drive was blocked by Hulley's outstretched hand only for DUFFTY follow up and head in the loose ball from 6 yards. From then on the game visibly deteriorated as it became a scrappy affair. On 72 minutes Andy Evans turned on the edge of the box before firing inches wide of the left hand post whilst three minutes later Droylsden substitute Hayder beat Jones on half way to break to the edge of the box where he squared to Holmes whose control let him down, allowing Kearney to smother his shot on the turn. At the other end Lewis turned and shot just wide of the right hand post when his better option may have been to have released the unmarked Fothergill to his right. Kearney again had to save well from Holmes on 86 minutes as the game went into extra time. Frickley had the better of the extra half hour but still couldn't find the vital goal. On 93 minutes Lewis beat his marker down the right before cutting inside and seeing his shot deflected into the keeper's arms whilst on 100 minutes Lewis sent Andy Evans sprinting towards the left hand corner of the box from where he chipped to the far post where Fothergill headed wide from 4 yards when he had all the time in the world. Chris Gowan and Brown exchanged passes down the left for Gowan to send over an inviting cross which Lewis volleyed over from 12 yards whilst on 112 minutes Andy Evans headed wide from Scott Collins' left wing cross. Right at the death Simon Collins sidefooted wide from Price's free-kick on the right. And so to penalties. Iain Brunskill stepped up to take the first kick for the Bloods but Kearney saved well to the right. Simon Collins took the Blues' first kick and scored just under the bar with Hulley rooted to the spot. Andy Green then scored to bring the Bloods level before Steve Price powered in his spot-kick to the left of the goal to keep the Blues in the driving seat. Aeon Lattie scored with the Bloods' third kick, low to the right before Graham Lewis saw his kick saved by Hulley. Lloyd Richardson netted with the Bloods' fourth kick whilst Carl Fothergill scored the Blues' fourth with a powerful low shot into the left hand corner. Kearney then saved Carl Holmes' kick, diving slightly to his left but Chris Gowan then drove his penalty over the bar. Kearney then saved his third penalty as he dived to his right to block Nigel Evans' effort, leaving Scott Collins to fire the winning kick inside the left hand post and send the Blues through to a Second Round tie at Grantham Town on 1st December.
