FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 3-2 DINNINGTON TOWN (AET)
Despite a lacklustre performance the Blues managed to scrape through to the 3rd Round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup after twice having to come from behind to beat their spirited opponents from the Central Midlands League Premier Division.
The opening 15 minutes saw the Blues go close to taking the lead on several occasions. After just 2 minutes a left wing corner by Steve Price hit the bar before being scrambled clear and then Chris Hurst nodded down a cross to Gary Duffty, just 5 yards out, who took too long allowing the keeper to save at his feet. At the other end Dinnington had a close range effort which sailed over the bar before Joe McAreavey sent Martin Fox clear in the box but he shot straight at the keeper from 15 yards. However, on 35 minutes Dinnington broke down their left and, with Chris Hilton out of position, their player advanced to the byeline before sending a low cross across the face of goal which the Frickley defence just stood and watched, allowing Cartledge to score at the far post. This forced the Blues to play a little and they deservedly equalised in first half injury time. Following some Blues pressure DEAN JONES headed in Price's corner from the left.
The visitors took the lead with the first goal attempt of the second half, scoring direct from a 25 yard free-kick on 51 minutes. At the other end Ian Edge shot over from 25 yards before HURST equalised on 64 minutes, heading in Price's free-kick from the left. The Blues came close to winning the game on 74 minutes when Jones flicked another free-kick by Price onto the bar but then Dinnington broke away to finish with a shot which hit the side netting.
The Blues won the game with the first attack of extra time. After 91 minutes Nicky Cranston's cross from the right was met superbly by HURST who powered a 12 yard header into the net. Two minutes later Hurst put Edge clear on the left and his cross was met at the far post by Cranston whose fierce volley was brilliantly saved by the keeper. The rest of extra time saw the Blues dictate the play but they produced few chances.
