Saturday 8th December 2001 - UniBond Premier Division

COLWYN BAY 1-5 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

The Blues made it five League matches unbeaten as a great second half performance saw Frickley run out 5-1 winners at Colwyn Bay. Gary marrow was forced into one change with Phil Brown coming in at right full back to allow Steve price to move into midfield in place of the injured Rob Hanby.

After an even start to the game the Blues started to forced a bit of pressure with Price going close on 10 minutes when he picked up Bay Keeper Smith's poor clearance some 35 yards out and sent it back goalwards but Smith recovered to save comfortably. Shortly afterwards Simon Collins spotted Smith off his line and tried a 30 yard chip which went just over the bar whilst at the other end Chris Gowan was forced to turn a dangerous cross from the right over his own bar. Graham Lewis was then forced off with a suspected broken ankle after falling awkwardly under a challenge and was replaced by Gary Duffty. On the half hour Andy Evans went close with a low 20 yard drive which Smith looked to have covered but he let it squirm under his body and was fortunate to see the ball trickle just wide of the right hand post. The home side took the lead on 34 minutes when Jon Wordsworth was harshly punished for a tackle some 25 yards out to the right of the box and Limbert sent over the free-kick to McIlvogue who headed past Martin Kearney. Frickley struck back seven minutes later as STEVE OLEKSEWYCZ ran on to a long ball down the left hand side of the box before turning a defender and lashing a fierce shot past Smith at the near post. On the stroke of half time Smith was again called on to save a low 18 yard shot from Evans.

The Blues took the lead six minutes after the break following Collins' left wing corner. Several players had goal attempts with all being cleared off the line before OLEKSEWYCZ followed up to head in from almost on the line. The home side pushed forward looking for an equaliser and Price was fortunate to get away with a booking after he gave the ball away trying to bring it out of defence leaving himself no option but to bring down the Bay forward who would have had a clear run at goal. On 74 minutes some good football by the Blues led to Evans having and angled shot blocked by Smith but OLEKSEWYCZ followed up to score from close range. The home side visibly went to pieces after this, although Kearney was forced to save a curling 25 yard free-kick from Limbert on 79 minutes but the Blues were soon back on the attack. A minute later the Blues won another left wing corner which ANDY EVANS headed in as Smith tried to punch clear. Then on 88 minutes some good build up play by the Blues saw Evans sweep the ball out wide to Pete Myers who cut into the box from the right. His cross towards the unmarked Duffty on the far post was poor but Smith fumbled it allowing DUFFTY to tap into an empty net. A minute later it could have been six as Myers got free in the box but Smith did well to save his low shot.
