Saturday 10th September - Frickley Athletic 2-0 Chadderton Gary Marrow kept faith with the same side that defeated Farsley Celtic on Tuesday evening but, with five substitutes available for the FA Cup, he brought fit again Phil Lindley and youth team striker Mark Crossfield onto the bench. Chadderton had only Dave Glynn and Matt Dickenson in their squad that played against the Blues last season. The Blues had an early claim for a penalty waved away when Lee Pugh latched onto Ritchie Butler's through ball and looked to be brought down by the out-rushing Sam McKewan but the referee waved away the claims. Minutes later Martyn Woolford skipped past Glynn down the left and send over a low cross which Ashley Scothern volleyed inches over the bar from 6 yards. With 15 minutes gone the Blues went even closer as Alex Callery's free-kick from the left evaded everyone including goalkeeper McKewan but came back off the far post. The Blues finally made the breakthrough on 20 minutes when Butler's cross-field ball came off a Chadderton head to fall kindly for Callery who cut cross for SCOTHERN to fire into the bottom right hand corner of the net. The visitors had a rare sight of goal on the half hour when a free-kick bounced kindly for Troy Hayder but his shot from 12 yards was comfortably saved by Gary Ingham. Two minutes later the Blues increased their lead as Scothern and Callery exchanged passes for Callery to break clear down the right and send over a cross which ANDY EVANS stabbed over McKewan at the second attempt. Minutes later a fantastic move which started in the Blues half and involved Steve Robinson, Callery, Evans and Scothern finished with Callery volleying just over the bar from 18 yards. The visitors became visibly rattled, so much so that Sammy Baker stormed off up the tunnel and had to be replaced by Matt Dickenson! Then, as the game entered first half stoppage time Gareth Thoms was sent off following a nasty stud-first tackle on Robinson. The Blues ought to have increased their lead withing a minute of the restart as Scothern took the ball into the box down the left before cutting it back across the 6 yard box to Woolford but he miss-kicked with the goal at his mercy. Five minutes later Woolford again went close but his 18 yard shot flew just the wrong side of the left hand post whilst on the hour Woolford met Callery's right wing cross on the volley from 10 yards but again the ball went the wrong side of the post. Within minutes Scothern played the ball through for Pugh as McKewan came out of his box but as Pugh tried to push the ball past him Mckewan blocked the ball with his arm only for the referee to wave away the claims for handball. Gary marrow introduced Mar Crossfield, Simon Collins and Craig Robinson for Evans, Matt Daly and Steve Robinson as the game wore on. As the game entered time added on Woolford shot straight at McKewan from just inside the box whilst he also met a Callery cross with a close range header which brought a great reaction save out of McKewan. There was still time for Selby to thread a ball through from the edge of the box for Scothern but McKewan blocked his effort with his legs only for the ball to fall to Woolford but David Clifton threw himself in front of Woolford's shot to deflect it for a corner.
