Saturday 21st October - Frickley Athletic 0-4 Cammell Laird

The Blues bowed out of the FA Carlsberg Trophy as Cammell Laird took advantage of a makeshift Blues' defence to run out 4-0 victors. Laird scored twice in the opening 8 minutes before adding a third early in the second half and a fourth on the break on 65 minutes.

Frickley manager Billy Heath had his work cut out to field a competitive side with injury ruling out Steve Kennedy and Dean Jones whilst Steve Heath and new signing Paul Palmer were cup-tied and Lee Stratford was suspended. New signing Danny Moore came in at right back with Chris Hilton moving to centre back alongside Calum Selby.

Cammell Laird got off to a dream start when they took the lead with barely 2 minutes on the clock. The Blues failed to cut out Antony Lynch's run into the box from the left and the ball was played back, via Ian Cooke, to Jamie McGuire who fired a low 22 yard shot into the bottom left hand corner. Alex Callery then played a neat ball through for Rob pell but Peter Crookes did well to block at Pell's feet. Within minutes the Blues had a mountain to climb as a Cammell Laird corner was only half  cleared by Scott Turner to Cooke on the left wing who had just returned to the field after having treatment. Cooke floated the ball back into the box where it seemed get caught by the wind and drifted just out of Jon Hood's reach and into the top right hand corner of the net.

The Blues struggled to break the visitors down but they ought to have pulled a goal back early in the second half when Turner fired narrowly wide from 10 yards following a Blues' corner. However, the visitors took advantage of a refereeing error to take a three goal lead on 50 minutes. Hilton's long clearance was clearly blocked by a Cammell Laird defender's arm as Pell looked to break clear but, instead, the referee waved play on and, with most of the Frickley players incensed by the referee's decision, Michael Cole broke away down the Lairds' right to cross for Ronnie Morgan to tap in at the far post. Moore had a 30 yard shot deflected for a corner before on 65 minutes the visitors added a fourth when Morgan's deep cross from the right was met by a fine diving header from Cooke at the back post. The nearest the Blues came to a consolation was when Selby hit the right hand post with a 25 yard free-kick.
