Saturday 27th April - UniBond Premier Division FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 3-0 BURSCOUGH With Dean Jones not considered fit enough Jon Wordsworth came into the back four whilst Leroy Chambers regained his place up front at the expense of Graham Lewis. Ashley Griffin, from the Blues' U19s, had a place on the subs. bench. The first half was largely forgetful, with only a handful of goalmouth incidents at either end but the game came to life much more in the second half. Chambers out to have given the Blues the lead after just 6 minutes when a great ball from the left by Rory Prendergast found its way across the six yard box to Chambers who came in at the far post but he blazed his effort over the bar. Five minutes later the Blues ahd a lucky escape when the ball pinged around the box before a Burscough forward fired high and wide from 10 yards. On 23 minutes Chambers played the ball back to Prendergast on the left who whipped over a cross which found the head of Andy Evans but his header clipped the top of the crossbar. Just after the half hour Steve Price was forced off with an injury and was replaced by Pete Myers with Matt Russell dropping into the defence. Prendergast then saw his cross-cum-shot from the left drop just over the bar before Burscough keeper Matt Taylor found himself in the perfect position to catch a point blank header from Simon Collins following Mark Place's headed ball back across the box. Burscough's Mike Mason almost caught Mark Wilkinson off his line just two minutes after the restart but his 25 yard shot went just over the bar. The Blues were soon back on the offensive with Chris Gowen picking up a loose ball before sending Prendergast away down the left. His cross to the far post found Myers but his shot went just wide. But, less then a minute later, the Blues took the lead when Myers sent over a cross from the right which found Collins unmarked just 5 yards out. Taylor did well to block his header but COLLINS followed up to tap into and empty net. Twelve minutes later the Blues extended their lead. The impressive Prendergast got past two challenges down the left and played the ball inside to COLLINS who flicked the ball up and volleyed past the stranded Taylor from 25 yards. Prendergast then had an 18 yard shot turned round the post by Taylor before Chambers saw his chip from the right hand corner of the box drift agonisingly over the bar with Taylor anxiously backpeddling. Then, on 73 minutes, a ball from the right fell to Prendergast just inside the box. His first shot was blocked by Taylor but the loose ball dropped to PRENDERGAST whose follow-up shot from on the ground found the top right hand corner of the net. Chambers' cross from the right then picked out Prendergast who shot over from 18 yards. Burscough still kept plugging away and the came close to grabbing a consolation on 87 minutes but Russell blocked Bowen's shot from 12 yards whilst the follow-up was deflected wide. On 89 minutes a through ball from Collins found Chambers all on his own some 25 yards out but Taylor came out to block his low shot.
