Saturday 17th September 2002 - Frickley Athletic 0-0 Burscough

As expected, Richard Siddall replaced the unavailable Mark Samways whilst Remo Nesa wasn't fit enough to play, enabling Paul Burke to start up front alongside Andy Evans.

The Blues started well but it was Burscough who had the first attempts at goal. On 13 minutes a Burscough break down the left saw Gary Martindale let Ryan Bowen's pass run through to Lee madin who skipped past Chris Gowen on the edge of the box but Siddall easily caught his 15 yard shot. Two minutes later John Lawless turned Andy Evans inside out down the left before seeing his cross headed behind by Scott Kerr for a corner. The corner found Burscough player/manager Shaun Teale 20 yards out and his shot was deflected into the arms of Siddall. The Blues responded just before the half hour with Nigel Hemstock doing well down the left before sending over a dangerous cross which was headed narrowly wide by Kerr. Then on 44 minutes Mark Hancock picked up a loose ball 25 yards out and fired over the bar.

Within three minutes of the restart the Blues had a chance o take the lead when Teale tried to let a through ball run through to Matthew Taylor but Burke nipped in between, with the ball rebounding off Taylor's legs to Evans on the right hand corner of the box. Unfortunately, Evans' shot sailed over the bar as Burscough defenders frantically covered the goal. On 52 minutes a quick break by the visitors saw Molyneux get away from marquis on half way before releasing Madin who got into the box before having his angled shot smothered by Siddall. Two minutes later Siddall was in action again as he saved with his legs from Martindale. A minute later Martindale's 22 yard free-kick was deflected off the wall for a corner which resulted in Bowen having a free header from 6 yards out but Siddall was equal to it. Lee Morris replaced Paul Burke on 58 minutes and this prompted a little more urgency up front for the Blues. On 63 minutes Hancock played a good ball down the right to Evans who picked out Kerr just inside the box but he scuffed his shot. Hancock was then involved again as he sent over a cross from the right which picked out Evans at the far post. He headed back across goal towards Moriis who looked certain to score but Taylor bravely came out to knock the ball away from him. Unfortunately for him he suffered an injury in the collision with Morris and received several minutes of treatment. On 76 minutes Marquis' header from Williams cross was going inside the right hand post but Taylor did well to get down and save. Disaster almost struck three minutes later as Lawless floated the ball over from the right only for it to evade everyone and strike the left hand upright. Taylor was forced off through injury on 84 minutes with Martindale replacing him between the sticks but the Blues barely tested him. But in the fourth minute of added time Gowen brought the ball out from defence and exchanged pases with Hine before shooting from 25 yards. The shot was redirected by Evans which wrong-footed the keeper, only for the ball to clip the outside of the left hand post.
