BURSCOUGH 1-2 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC
Duane Beckett snatched a dramatic winner three minutes into added time give Frickley their first 'double' of the season and three crucial points in their bid to avoid relegation. Beckett volleyed into the top right hand corner from just inside the box after a cross was only half cleared to him. This came after Steve Price scored from the spot on 83 minutes to level the scores following the home side taking the lead with their first decent shot at goal on 25 minutes.
Frickley had started the game strongly, dominating most of the opening exchanges with the home side hardly having a sniff of goal. On 5 minutes Leroy Chambers sent Craig Marsh away down the middle. He played it out wide to the right to Chris Hilton who sent over a dangerous cross towards Chambers in the box but a crowd of defenders on the line cleared the danger. Two minutes later Phil Brown shot wide from the edge of the box and then Mark Tyrell headed into the side netting from another Hilton cross as it seemed only a matter of time before Frickley took the lead. Mark Wilkinson was called into action for the first time on 13 minutes as he saved from birch with his feet before Chambers missed a golden opportunity to give Frickley the lead on 23 minutes. Some good work by Marsh down the left saw him find Chambers unmarked just a few yards out but he made hardly any contact with the ball, enabling the keeper to save easily. The miss was to prove costly as two minutes later Birch caught Wilkinson out of position to score with a chip from outside the box. From then onwards Burscough came more into the game as Frickley's confidence visibly disappeared. In fact it was the home side who came nearest to scoring again but Wilkinson pulled off a brilliant save to block a header from point blank range at the far post on 62 minutes. As the game entered the last ten minutes Frickley has three penalty appeals in quick succession as first Andy Gregory was knocked to the ground but play was waved on, then Beckett had a shot blocked by an arm but again protests were waved away but almost immediately Tyrell went down in the box for possibly the least deserving appeal but this time the referee pointed to the spot. A fracas then ensued before STEVE PRICE stepped up to confidently stroke in the spot kick on 83 minutes. Burscough then hit the side netting from a good position before, deep into stoppage time, a cross from the left was cleared only as far as BECKETT on the edge of the box who fired an unstoppable volley into the top right hand corner. Two minutes later Matthew Wilkinson headed into the side netting at the far post from Chambers' cross before the referee finally blew the final whistle
