Saturday 17th February - Burscough 5-2 Frickley Athletic
Three goals in nine minutes after the interval put
the skids under Frickley and set up a UniBond Premier Division double for
Burscough.
With skipper Steve Kennedy and striker Lee Morris
both out through suspension, the Blues were further handicapped by the
unavailability of Steve Robinson and Paul Palmer, forcing a major reshuffle
but looked impressive up to the break.
Ashley Vickers cut in from the left in the 15th
minute but hit his 20 yard shot straight at home keeper Tony MacMillan, while
Scott Turner burst into the penalty area from the right two minutes later and
appeared to have his shirt pulled by Farrell Kilbane although appeals for a
penalty were waved aside.
Burscough took the lead in the 22nd minute when
Dave Roberts fired an angled shot just inside the far post after Jon Hood had
blocked his first effort.
Continuing to look constructive, Frickley
equalised in the 40th minute, Carl Wood threading a pass through for Ben
Eastwood to lob the advancing keeper from 15 yards, and they almost turned the
tables two minutes later, Steve Heath's header from a left wing corner being
inches too high while Ross Haywood then clipped the bar with an angled 15 yard
effort.
A pinpoint cross by Turner immediately after the
resumption beat the Burscough cover but Vickers just failed to reach it and
turn the ball into an empty net.
The visitors were made to pay in the 48th minute
when Neil Robinson headed Burscough back in front at the near post after a
left wing cross.
A long ball from defence on the hour was
snapped up by Kevin Leadbetter, who was brought down by Hood as he shot,
but Ciaran Kilheeney steered the ball over the line, and Hood escaped with a
booking.
A cross from the left four minutes later led to
Robbie Booth tapping in from close range at the second attempt to increase the
home advantage.
Matty McGinn hit the underside of the bar from 18
yards in the 67th minute and Hood caught the ball, but when the Blues
keeper sliced a clearance from a back pass two minutes later, Kilheeney hit a
first time 25 yard drive into the net.
Frickley refused to give in and Dean Jones was
judged to have been fouled when he went up to join the attack in the 72nd
minute, Eastwood converting the resultant penalty to narrow the gap, but
the Blues tale of woe was extended in stoppage time when Adam Pollock was red
carded for bringing down Kilheeney
