Saturday 8th January - Frickley Athletic 3-1 Bridlington Town DVD/Video Available of this match - See Club Shop The Blues gained a vital win over Bridlington Town in extremely blustery conditions to revive hopes of moving out of the bottom four and avoiding relegation to the UniBond First Division. Gary Marrow was again without Steve Woolford, who was ruled out with flu, but new signing Andy Evans came in up front in place of Richard Tracey and Dean Foley came into the back four, allowing Steve Kennedy to move into midfield. Playing into the gusting wind in the first half the Blues found themselves pushed back during the early stages of the first half with Bridlington forcing several corners and sending over some high crosses but they failed to really trouble Gary Ingham in the Blues' goal. The Blues' first chance came after ten minutes when Wael Nazha and Leroy Chambers combined for Chambers to tee up Neil Ashley but his low 20 yard shot went wide of the left hand post. Nazha then put a 25 yards free-kick over the bar as the Blues came more into the game. Nazha then sent Chambers clear but his dipping 18 yard shot bounced off the top of the crossbar. The visitors almost took the lead with a quick break down the right as Lee Harper played the ball into the path of Paul Palmer inside the box but his 12 yard shot came back off the right hand post with Ingham beaten. Minutes later Steve heath saw his 25 yard shot deflect off Lee Pugh and loop just over the bar and Palmer saw his 25 yard free-kick easily collected by Ingham. The Blues made their intentions know from the outset of the second half. Within minutes of the restart Evans volleyed narrowly over the bar and Chambers headed wide following a corner. The Blues got the vital breakthrough after 57 minutes when Chambers flicked the ball forward for Nazha to chase down the left of the box. Nazha's cross was missed by Steve Fisher and came back off the legs of Harper to EVANS who fired the ball just inside the right hand post via 'keeper Gavin Kelly's body. Pugh then had a great run from half way before firing in a low left-footed shot from 20 yards which Kelly saved easily before the Blues extended their lead on 67 minutes. Ashley's right wing corner was partly cleared by the knee of James Tomlinson only for it to fall kindly for FOLEY to fire in a low angled drive into the opposite corner of the net from 6 yards. A minute later Bridlington were reduced to ten men when captain Harper was shown a straight red card following an off the ball incident with Kennedy. Calum Selby then advanced down the left before feeding the overlapping Nazha who cut inside and let fly with a powerful right foot shot which brought out an acrobatic one-handed save from Kelly. However, Bridlington were the next to strike when a 20 yard free-kick came back off Ingham's right hand post and rolled across goal to Heath but Kennedy blocked his shot on the line only for the ball to eventually reach Giblin who fired into the roof of the net from 2 yards after 78 minutes. The Blues were soon back on the attack with Ashley firing wide from 25 yards before Chambers missed a golden opportunity to seal the game when Kelly's clearance struck Evans and fell kindly for Chambers. Unfortunately, Chambers failed to bring the ball fully under control and allowed Kelly to redeem himself by pushing Chambers' shot away only for it to fall to Nazha but Craig Suddaby cleared off the line. Then, with time running out, Chambers held the ball up well before playing it into the path of PUGH who fired a low 22 yard shot into the bottom left hand corner. Seconds later Pugh tried his luck from 25 yards but this time his effort flew just wide of the right hand post.
