Saturday 30th August - Barrow 3-1 Frickley Athletic The Blues suffered defeat at Holker Street despite taking the lead after just 16 minutes through Lee Morris following a mistake by Barrow 'keeper Simon Bishop. After losing Simon Shaw through injury after just 3 minutes, the home side started well with Mark Samways tipping a low 18 yard shot from Michael Oliver round the post after just 7 minutes. A minute later the Blues threatened when Paul Hurrell sent Morris clear but Bishop raced out to clear the danger. However on 16 minutes Bishop sliced a clearance straight to MORRIS who controlled the ball before slotting the ball under Bishop from 15 yards to give the Blues an unlikely lead. Barrow should have drawn level on 22 minutes but Steve Gaughan just failed to make contact with Scott Maxfield's cross. Michael Rankine then flicked a cross on to Oliver who fired over from 12 yards as Barrow started to threaten regularly. However, they looked vulnerable in defence and Morris shot narrowly wide on 27 minutes after combining well with Hurrell. On 31 minutes Hurrell picked up another bad Barrow pass to beat James Cotterill and release Morris who again fired wide. However, on 39 minutes the inevitable happened when a deep cross from the left was headed back across goal by Gaughan for Oliver to head in from 6 yards. At half time Gary Hatto replaced Kieran O'Brien (presumably injured) but Barrow were soon into their stride. On 54 minutes Scott Maxfield saw his 25 yard shot deflected straight into Samways' arms whilst a minute later Gavin Knight got clear of Karl Colley but shot tamely at Samways from 12 yards. The Blues managed a good build-up of their own on 57 minutes when Hatto, Hurrell and Phil Lindley combined for Lindley to volley from 25 yards but Bishop caught it at full stretch. On 63 minutes Barrow took the lead when Colley's header clear fell to Knight who hit a tremendous first time volley past Samways from 25 yards. On 76 minutes a Barrow left-wing corner was headed up into the air by Colley and Rankine was the first to react to force the ball in from almost on the line. Sharpe introduced French midfielder Jacques Joblon straight after the restart and he was unlucky to see his chipped 22 yard free-kick headed off the line by Mark Hume on 82 minutes. Frickley Athletic : Samways, Kamara, O'Brien (Hatto 45), Pugh (Joblon 77), Jackson, Colley, Robinson, Bernard, Morris, Hurrell (Lafferty 66), Lindley. Att: 1004 Ref : Mr D G Commins
