Saturday 28th December - Frickley Athletic 0-0 Ashton United

Match Abandoned after 45 minutes due to floodlight failure

After giving a good account of themselves in the opening half and being unfortunate not to be in the lead the Blues will be very disappointed that today's game had to be abandoned due to a power failure for the floodlights.

With Paul Marquis starting a one match suspension, Phil Sharpe re-signed right full-back Gary Reece (who had left to join Belper at the start of this season and then moved on to Bradford Park Avenue). This enabled Mark Hancock and Steve Woolford to play alongside Antony Jackson as 3 centre halves.

The Blues had gone close twice in the first ten minutes when first Chris Newton almost caught Andy Johnston off his line but the keeper caught the effort well and then Reece shot just wide of the right hand post following a pass from Newton. Chris Gowen then saw his 20 yard free-kick palmed over the bar before Ashton's Matthew Rush shot over from 30 yards following a half cleared corner. On the half hour Curtis Bernard picked out an unmarked Newton in the box but he slipped on the heavy pitch. Gareth Morris then put a 25 yarder just wide of  Mark Samways' left hand post. On 34 minutes Gowen played Bernard in with a great ball inside the defender but Bernard blazed an angled shot wide from around 8 yards. Then Ashton's Morris put a 25 yard free-kick over the bar just before half time - or full time as it came to be!
