Saturday 18th October - Frickley Athletic 1-2 Ashton United For the second week in succession the Blues took an early lead only to concede an equaliser and then succumb to a late winner. Phil Sharpe was without the suspended duo of Chris Kamara and Lee Pugh so brought back Karl Colley and included new signing Shaun Varley from Gainsborough Trinity. Frickley started well and went close to taking the lead after just 5 minutes when Nick Richardson won the ball well some 30 yards out and played the ball to Varley to his right who then fed the overlapping Duncan Richards but his 15yard shot was caught on the line. Two minutes later Ashton's Dean Johnson gave the ball away to Gary Hatto whose cross was met by Varley but 'keeper Daniel Trueman got down well to block his header on the line. On 11 minutes the Blues did manage to take the lead when Lee Morris fed MARK VICKERAGE who was in acres of space and had the simple task of beating Trueman from just inside the box. On 16 minutes Johnson shot narrowly over from close range as Ashton started to threaten. Mark Samways then did well to block an angled shot from Craig Fleury before Paul Garvey headed a foot wide of the right hand post when he was completely unmarked. Ashton went close still on 36 minutes when Fleury's free-kick was met by the head of Darren Royle but the ball struck the foot of the post and was hacked clear. On 40 minutes the Blues thought they had increased their lead when Morris headed in Hatto's cross but it was ruled out for offside, presumably against someone else as Morris was clearly onside. On 43 minutes Ashton finally got their reward when Martin Allison met a corner with a powerful header that gave Samways no chance. A minute later worse almost followed as Colley's woeful back-pass let in Phil Denney but his angled shot hit the side netting. At half time Ashton replaced Danny White with Peter Carty whilst the Blues pushed Colley up front with Morris dropping deeper. On 61 minutes Morris saw his 25 yard free-kick well caught under the bar whilst less then sixty second later Samways got down well to save from Allison. Dan Sheriffe then replaced Varley and he came close to forging a second goal for the Blues on 69 minutes when his cross from the right was met by Colley, who got to it just before Trueman, but his effort went well over the bar. Sheriffe did well down the right after 75 minutes when he evaded three challenges as he cut into the box and played the ball back to Vickerage but his shot hit the side netting. The winning goal came on 79 minutes when Denney beat Paul Marquis some 35 yards out and released Garvey who ran at Antony Jackson before sending the ball into the box to where Denny had continued his run (unlike Marquis) and he easily beat Samways from 15 yards. In the dying minute Ashton went close to increasing their lead with Steve Smith shooting straight at Samways and Garvey heading over from 6 yards.
