Saturday 24th November 2001 - UniBond Premier Division FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 3-1 ALTRINCHAM The Blues made it seven matches unbeaten as they comfortably saw off the challenge of promotion chasing Altrincham with three first half goals. Andy Evans played probably his last game for the club before moving on to Scarborough and he was instrumental in all three goals. Evans was partnered up front by Steve Oleksewycz who has joined the club on loan from Halifax Town. Frickley dominated the first half with Simon Collins lashing a 25 yard shot well over the bar in the third minute before the Blues took the lead on 12 minutes. Steve Price played the ball in from the right, Evans flicked it on and SIMON COLLINS came in at the far post to knock the ball in from close range. Eight minutes later it should have been 2-0 as Oleksewycz and Pete Myers combined down the right for Myers to pick out Graham Lewis who was unmarked on the far side of the penalty area. However, with plenty of time to control the ball and place his shot, Lewis chose to volley with the ball flying a couple of feet over the bar. But, Blues supporters didn't have long to wait before a second was scored. On 23 minutes Evans challenged Altrincham keeper Coburn for a high ball but Coburn got nowhere near it, with the ball falling kindly to MYERS who drove it first time just inside the left hand post from 16 yards. The Altrincham management immediately disputed the goal, causing play to be stopped for several minutes whilst they argued with the referee who ordered one of them from the dugout but, disgracefully he refused to go as he continued arguing with the referee until an Altrincham official dragged him away. Five minutes later Price's long throw from the right was flicked on in the box by Evans and again COLLINS came in at the back post to bundle the ball in for the Blues' third. Just before half time Collins shot just wide of the right hand post whilst the visitors managed their first decent attack when Martin Kearney was forced to tip the ball over the bar after Dean Jones managed deflect a cross from the right goalwards with his head. In the fourth minute of injury time Altrincham managed their first shot on target but Craney's effort was straight at Kearney. The second half saw Altrincham enjoy more possession, particularly later on in the half, but they had Coburn to thank for preventing the Blues scoring a fourth on 52 minutes when he pulled off great one handed save to deny Jones (I think) following a corner. Nine minutes later Lewis was unlucky as he tried to divert a wayward shot by Myers goalwards but he was unable to get his effort on target. Myers then shot wide of the right hand post after some good work from Oleksewycz had created some space for him but Altrincham looked odds on to pull a goal back on 74 minutes but Kearney pulled off a great save to deny Thornley from close range. The visitors started to sense they could get back into the game as they began to push forward more and it came as no surprise when the unmarked Kevin Hulme headed in from 4 yards following a cross from the left on 82 minutes. However, the Blues were in no mood to let their hard work of the first half go to waste and they defended well for the remainder of the match. In fact on 90 minutes the Blues could have added to their tally when substitute Carl Fothergill played the ball across the edge of the box to the unmarked Scott Collins but the pass was a bit weak, forcing Collins to have to wait for the ball during which time he has closed down with Collins evntually shooting agonisingly wide of the left hand post. Three minutes into time added on Kearney saved a low18 yard shot from Thornley at the second attempt whilst with almost the last kick of the game Murphy screwed an angled shot wide Frickley Athletic : Kearney, Simon Collins, Gowan, Hanby, Wordsworth, Jones, Lewis (Scott Collins 65), Price, Evans, Oleksewycz (Fothergill 79), Myers (Brown 86).
