ALTRINCHAM 0-2 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC
Frickley came away from from Altrincham with with a thoroughly
deserved first League double of the season after giving an excellent all-round
display to inflict only the home sides second home League defeat of the season.
Mark Place was absent with a groin strain with Steve Price deputising again.
Playing
in yellow on a soggy pitch and into a strong wind Frickley took the game to
Altrincham from the start. After just 3 minutes Rory Prendergast got away down
the left and sent over a deep cross which was just too high for Leroy Chambers
in the box. The ball was retrieved by Matt Russell on the right who whipped the
ball back in to Chambers who headed well wide of the near post. The home side
rarely threatened whilst Frickley looked composed in midfield but it was on the
half hour mark before Frickley threatened again. Andy Evans did well down the
left before feeding the onrushing Simon Collins who brought the ball to the edge
of the Altrincham box before playing it into t he
path of the overlapping Russell who hit a low 18 yard shot which Coburn did well
to block. The ball was cleared as far as Gary Reece who played it back into the
box where it fell kindly for CHAMBERS to fire past Coburn from 6 yards. Just
before half time a Frickley corner from the left was cleared as far as Russell
who lifted it back into the danger area where Chambers headed just wide of the
far post.
Barely three minutes after the restart Frickley found themselves
2-0 in front when Reece sent over a great cross from the right which EVANS
brilliantly volleyed in from 10 yards after making a run across the last
defender. At the other end Altrincham finally created their first good chance of
the game when Rod Thornley found himself with a shooting chance to the right of
the goal but Mark Wilkinson pulled off a good save to deny him. An Alty cross
from the left was then held up in the wind causing
Wilkinson to only get a touch to the ball as he tried to punch. The ball dropped
to Alty sub Lee Poland who volleyed over from close range. The Blues were soon
back on the attack with Russell winning the ball well in the middle of the Alty
half before playing it between two defenders for Evans to break clear only for
Coburn to race out and block his shot well and, whilst the rebound fell back to
Evans, he could only find the side netting from a very acute angle. On 75
minutes Collins played a good ball out to Graham Lewis on the left who cut into
the box before having his low right foot shot saved by Coburn. Shortly
afterwards Collins won the ball well out on the right before turning two
defenders on the edge of the box and firing in a stinging shot which Coburn held
well at the second attempt. Coburn again denied Frickley a third in the 80th
minute when he first saved well from Prendergast, who had robbed a defender and
then cut in from the left before shooting, and then saved Rob Hanby's follow-up
shot with an outstretched leg.
