Saturday 26th October - Frickley Athletic 2-1 Accrington Stanley

Phil Sharpe welcomed back Mark Samways, Chris Gowen, Craig Elkin, Ryan Williams and Paul Marquis but Andy Evans was absent through illness.

Playing with a strong wind behind them in the first half the Blues took the game to the visitors from the kick-off but it was Stanley who had the

first shot at goal on 5 minutes when the Blues wasted a corner. Remo Nesa lost the ball which enabled Tony Black to sprint away down the left and send over a deep cross which Simon Carden blasted over from 15 yards. On 14 minutes former Liverpool player Mike Marsh hit a low shot wide of the left hand post before the Blues came within a whisker of scoring on 15 minutes. Lee Morris chased a lost cause to keep the ball in play to the right of the box with Stanley 'keeper Jamie Speare losing out to him. He cut the ball back to Nesa who played it into the box. The ball was half cleared as far as Curtis Bernard whose miss-hit shot was sliced off the line by Peter Cavanagh. On the half hour a Bernard dummy fooled Dean Calcutt which enabled Ryan Williams to break down the left but his dangerous cross was cut out at the expense of a corner. Nesa' corner was headed wide at the back post by Antony Jackson. Then, on 32 minutes Bernard found himself in a good position in

the box but his angled shot looked to have been blocked by a Stanley player's arm. The referee awarded a corner but, on talking to his assistant, Sean Chatwin, he awarded a penalty which MARK HANCOCK duly scored from. On 36 minutes Bernard flicked on to Morris but his first time shot from 18 yards was weak and wide but on 37 minutes Elkin lifted the ball over the defence for Morris to chase only for Mark Sertori to bundle him over as he got clear. Sertori was lucky to escape with only a yellow card. The free-kick by Hancock was deflected over for a corner which, when taken by Williams, was headed against his own crossbar by a defender and PAUL MARQUIS slammed in the rebound from 4 yards. Right on the stroke of half time Marquis was adjudged to be the villain as he blocked the run of Tony Black in the box with the referee awarding a penalty which Cavanagh scored from.

With Accrington having the wind advantage in the second half they pushed forward for an equaliser. On 48 minutes Black blasted over after

Marsh's free-kick was flicked on to him but on 52 minutes they were lucky to still have eleven men on the field when Nesa played the ball over the defence for Bernard who was dragged back by Jonathan Smith but the referee again only produced a yellow card. The Blues had a lucky break on 54 minutes when Samways and Duncan Richards got in a mess under pressure from Black but Samways managed to tackle him. On the hour mark Black put a diving header over the bar but a on 61 minutes they were reduced to ten men when a fracas between Morris and Sertori saw both players receive yellow cards and hence a red for Sertori. On 71 minutes Samways did well to block a close range shot from Mullen whilst the Blues managed to break with Williams shooting wide from 18 yards. Samways then saved a 20 yard free-kick by Cavanagh whilst Mullen headed over from a corner on 83 minutes. The Blues should have made the game safe on 87 minutes when Morris cut into the box from the left and laid the ball back to Elkin but Carden made a great saving tackle. The final four minutes of injury time (which lasted 7 minutes) seemed like an age but the Blues hung on for a vital win.
